Cannabis history in Algeria:
Cannabis is believed to have first been introduced to the area during the Arab invasions of the 9th through the 12th centuries. The use of cannabis in Algeria is responsible for spreading the habit back to France following their 1830 occupation of Algeria. Up until the 20th century Algeria sold cannabis in shops and hookah bars.
Cannabis today in Algeria:
Algeria gained its independence from France in 1965 however their stance publicly against cannabis has roots dating back from its french occupation. Today with the modern drug trade pushing hashish from morocco to Europe and other African countries, their laws are rather strict. This is in stark contrast to the hundreds of years of rich history that Algeria has with cannabis. However most of the people remain indifferent.
